Why 7 days in a week? - An ode to the mystical number “7”

Why 7? Why not 5 or 10, which would make more sense? Are there any other Calendar systems in other civilizations that would follow a different cycle? Is there a cosmic connection? If yes, what is it?! If not, why is this system so consistent without superficial relevance? Why do we need Calendars at all?
